Lapped Outside Walls

Construction · Detail

Context Wall Membrane218 · Roof Vaults220

Problem

A smooth, unbroken outer skin lets rain find its way in all too easily, and at the same time reads as flat and expressionless — the facade lacks the relief that would give it depth.

Solution

Clad outside walls in overlapping, scale-like layers — shingles, boards, or tiles — that shed the rain reliably while giving the face of the building real depth, shadow, and texture.
