Pattern 2
The Distribution of Towns
Problem
When growth funnels into a handful of metropolises, those cities swell past any human scale while smaller towns and the countryside empty out. Neither the overcrowded city nor the drained land beyond it keeps a healthy balance of life.
Solution
Spread towns of many different sizes deliberately across the whole region — from small settlements up to a few larger centers — so that growth distributes itself among many places instead of piling up in a few giant cities.
