Problem
A cold, hard ground floor — bare concrete, say — is unpleasant to walk on barefoot and leaves the house feeling cut off from the earth it stands on.
Solution
Finish the ground floor slab so it feels warm and pleasant underfoot — with wood, brick, or another foot-friendly surface — tying the house to the earth instead of holding it at arm's length.
