Staircase as a Stage

Buildings · Room

Context Arcades119 · The Flow Through Rooms131 · Short Passages132

Problem

A narrow, steep staircase serves only as a transit between floors — no one lingers there by choice. Yet a stair often sits at a central point in the house, exactly where people might otherwise cross paths.

Solution

Build the main stair broad, bright, and open like a small stage, with room to sit or pause on it, so it invites encounters and lets people be seen, instead of merely carrying them up and down.
