Problem

Kitchen scraps and garden clippings usually go straight into the trash and leave the property's cycle for good, so the soil grows quietly poorer while fertilizer has to be bought in from elsewhere.

Solution

Set up a compost heap in an inconspicuous, easily reached corner of the garden, where scraps and clippings ripen into soil, and return that soil to the beds it came from.
