Problem
A bare, freestanding column in the middle of a room is often felt only as an obstacle to walk around, contributing nothing to the space itself.
Solution
Shape the spot around each column into a small place of its own — with a seat, a ledge, or a niche to lean against — so the column becomes a made place rather than a bare obstruction.
