Problem
Many built environments unconsciously lean one way — hard, competitive, and purely functional, or else purely domestic and closed off. Where only one character dominates, people who lean the other way feel like strangers in their own surroundings.
Solution
Shape towns and buildings so that qualities of both kinds — toughness and tenderness, openness and enclosure — find equal room to exist, so that every person, whatever their nature, can find a place that fits them.
