Problem

Planners like to place a settlement's center at its exact geometric middle, because that looks orderly and fair. But movement and life rarely follow geometry — a center forced into the dead middle often stays empty, while the real life of the place gathers somewhere off to the side.

Solution

Locate a community's center wherever paths and movement naturally converge — usually somewhat off the geometric middle — and let it grow outward from there, instead of forcing it into a mathematically central spot.
