Problem
Without a graded sequence from public through semi-public to private outdoor space, neither residents nor visitors can tell how open or sheltered a place is meant to be, and its use and mood never quite match.
Solution
Grade the outdoor spaces of a place in steps from wholly public down to wholly private, so that each one's position and design signal how accessible or sheltered it is meant to feel.
