Pattern 7
The Countryside
Context The Distribution of Towns2 · City Country Fingers3 · Agricultural Valleys4 · Lace of Country Streets5 · Country Towns6
Problem
When land is treated as ordinary property to be held idle or exploited at will, the countryside loses its upkeep and its value to everyone. No one feels responsible for the whole any longer.
Solution
Treat all open land as a shared, tended commons for which every user carries responsibility, rather than as private property that may simply lie idle or be exploited without care.
