Problem

Houses tend to get built for one fixed family shape, yet circumstances keep shifting — children leave, income rises and falls, guests or lodgers arrive. Without a room that has its own way in, a house cannot answer to this, and spare rooms sit idle while space is short elsewhere.

Solution

Build at least one room with its own outside door into every sizable house, one that can be let out, handed to a guest, or turned to whatever changing need arises, independent of the rest of the household.
