Light on Two Sides of Every Room

Buildings · Room

Context Wings of Light107 · Positive Outdoor Space106 · Long Thin House109 · Cascade of Roofs116

Problem

A room lit from only one wall ends up both flat and glaring at once: light falls so one-sidedly that faces and objects sit in harsh silhouette while the rest of the room stays dim. Over time such rooms get avoided, even though they look bright enough at first glance.

Solution

Arrange every room that matters so daylight enters from at least two different sides, letting light and shadow balance each other so the whole room reads as softly and evenly lit.
