Problem
Someone who steps straight from the street into an open living room never gets a moment to arrive — outside and inside collide with no filter between them. Without some intermediate step, entering a house feels abrupt and unsheltered.
Solution
Build a small room of its own just behind the front door, where people arriving can pause, set down coats and shoes, and gather themselves before moving on into the main rooms of the house.
