Problem

Without a sheltered growing space, the gardening season snaps shut at the first cold snap, and the line between indoors and outdoors stays hard — a person is either in the warm house or out in the cold garden. What's usually missing is a middle ground joining the two.

Solution

Attach a greenhouse to the house, or set one close by, to stretch the growing season while also giving it a second life as a warm, light-filled room to sit in, a threshold between house and garden.
